IMPLANTS RUPTURE SPONTANEOUSLY: You may never know the reason. Some experts are warning that the majority of implants rupture with no known cause. Of course, a blow of any kind may also rupture an implant. Just reaching for something has been known to cause a rupture. Failure of the shell due to the stress and wearing of the body may be anticipated with time.

CONTAMINATION BY MICRO-ORGANISMS AND DECAYING PROTEIN MATTER IS LIKELY: The shell of the implant is semi-permeable. If you lay a saline implant on a counter the saline will evaporate in several weeks. If the saline can get out, anything in your body can get in. You have all kinds of viruses, bacteria and fungi in your body.

COLONIZATION OF THESE MICRO-ORGANISMS IS A SERIOUS HEALTH THREAT: Because the shell is semi-permeable, colonized bacteria, fungi and viruses can enter your body. Often these micro-organisms have very long incubation periods and the saline solution is a very friendly host environment. Some implants have even contained plant life when removed from the body.

SOME IMPLANTS HAVE BEEN IMPLANTED WITH FAULTY VALVES WHICH RELEASE CONTENTS OF THE IMPLANTS: This is true of both saline and silicone implants. When micro-organisms are present, this present a different type of danger.

ALL SALINE SOLUTIONS HAVE EXPIRATION DATES: If the saline is implanted in your body, the date will expire.

FUNGAL INFECTIONS OFTEN CAN BE FOUND IN THE NAILS, VAGINA, MOUTH, AND IN OTHER BODY TISSUES (HANDS, FEET, ETC.) OF WOMEN WITH SALINE OR SILICONE IMPLANTS.

AUTO-IMMUNE PROBLEMS MAY BE CAUSED BY THE MICRO-ORGANISMS, THE DECAYING BODY TISSUE, OR A COMBINATION OF THE TWO.

INFECTION IS INDICATED BY SWELLING, TENDERNESS, PAIN, AND FEVER: In the immediate post-operative period, treatment for infection may include antibiotics (sometimes intravenously), drains placed around the implants, and/or implant removal.

POSSIBLE COMPLICATIONS OF SALINE OR SILICONE IMPLANTS INCLUDES HYPERSENSITIVITY TO SILICONE, SKIN NECROSIS (DEATH), CHANGE IN NIPPLE SENSATION, SCARRING AND CALCIFICATION OF THE SCAR CAPSULE WHICH SURROUNDS ALL IMPLANTS.

MAMMOGRAPHIC PROCEDURES (PRESSURE) MAY RUPTURE IMPLANTS: This is especially true as the implants age, because the silicone shell becomes weaker.

ALL IMPLANTS OBSCURE BREAST TISSUE: Cancer detection by mammography is more difficult with any breast implant.

SURGEONS HAVE PACKAGE INSERTS THAT SHOULD BE GIVEN TO ALL PATIENTS PRIOR TO IMPLANTATION OF ANY BREAST IMPLANT: If you are not given one, ask for it. You can not truly have informed consent without all available information. The package inserts list possible complications of saline or silicone breast implants. These include rupture, repeat surgeries, capsular contracture, calcium deposits, changes in nipple sensation, interference with mammography, and an increase risk of auto-immune disease. It does not list infection, hemorrhaging, and death, all of which have occurred with this surgery.

WOMEN WHOM HAVE NEVER HAD ANY IMPLANT BUT SALINE ARE SHOWING ANTIBODIES TO SILICONE: The silicone in the shell may be very toxic. Some analysts have stated that it is more toxic than the silicone inside implants.

MANY CHEMICALS MAY BE INCLUDED IN THE FORMATION OF THE SILICONE SHELL AS WELL AS THE LIQUID SILICONE INSIDE SOME IMPLANTS: Some heavy metals may also have been included as catalysts to form the material for the shell. Sis-platinum, a chemotherapy agent, is often found in silicone implants. We have had reports of arsenic in the shells of some implants.

ANTIBODIES TO NEUROLOGICAL TISSUE MAY BE FORMED IN ADDITION OR INSTEAD OF AUTO-IMMUNE ANTIBODIES: Tests are showing antibodies to the myelin in the brain, peripheral nervous system, and the central nervous system.

WHEN SALINE IMPLANTS RUPTURE, THEY DEFLATE IMMEDIATELY. SURGERY IS REQUIRED TO REMOVE AND REPLACE THE IMPLANT: Most surgeons do not remove the scar capsule, which contains silicone that has sloughed off the implant from the date of implantation. This material may later cause immune or neurological antibodies or hypersensitivity to silicone.

CAPSULAR CONTRACTURE IS AS COMMON WITH SALINE IMPLANTS AS IT IS WITH SILICONE IMPLANTS: Some studies indicate that the rate is 70% or better. "Popping" an implant may rupture it. The danger of rupture with this procedure seems to increase with the age of the implant.

CAPSULAR CONTRACTURE CAN CAUSE VERY PAINFUL BREAST: Many women cannot lie on their side or their stomachs because of the pain. The pain may extend into the ribs.

CAPSULAR CONTRACTURE MAY CAUSE BADLY DEFORMED, VERY HARD BREASTS: In addition, the implant may become displaced upward, downward, or toward the armpit.

GIVEN TIME, CALCIUM DEPOSITS FORM AROUND ALL BREAST IMPLANTS: These can contribute to capsular contracture and also may cause a loss of blood flow to the calcified area. This can become thick enough to be a danger to your health. Several women have had gangrene in this tissue because it was too thick for proper circulation and the tissue dies.

THERE HAVE BEEN SEVERAL DEATHS REPORTED FROM LONG-TERM COMPLICATIONS FROM SALINE IMPLANTS: Deaths have also been reported from complications from silicone implants. We must know all of the risks before we place a foreign object in our bodies.

FOREIGN BODY REACTION: Even a splinter causes a reaction in our bodies, and we remove it as soon as humanly possible. Many items cause a foreign body reaction when placed in the human body. Why would implants of any type be different.

SILICONE MAY BE CHEMICALLY INERT, BUT IT IS NOT BIOLOGICALLY INERT: What this means is that any form of silicone may cause a reaction in the human body. When your hear the term inert, that means chemically inert. Ask any chemist just what chemically inert means and you will realize that it does not mean that it is compatible with the human body.

CHEEK, CHIN, JOINT, AND OTHER SILICONE IMPLANTS ARE CAUSING PROBLEMS FOR MANY RECIPIENTS: Testicular and penile implants are also troublesome and are coming under investigation by the FDA.

THE PROPOSED GLOBAL SETTLEMENT INCLUDES SALINE IMPLANTS: the manufacturers must be aware of the many problems or these implants would never have been included in this proposal. If these implants are safe, we should all ask why they are included in a class action lawsuit.

THERE ARE OTHER OPTIONS FOR SAGGING OR SMALL BREAST WHICH INCLUDE MASTOPEXY (A BREAST LIFT), TISSUE TRANSFERS, AND REBUILDING WITH LOCAL TISSUE: In the hands of a skilled surgeon, although these are major surgeries, it is your own tissue. Your body will accept it a such and will not form antibodies to it.

ACCEPTING YOUR BODY THE WAY IT IS: We have all bought into the myth that women have to look like the models we see on TV, in magazines, or in movies. Learning to love ourselves and our bodies will certainly help us accept the fact that very, very few truly perfect bodies exist. Self-esteem is learned. If it is poor, it can be re-energized.
