September 1997

Dear Silicone Survivors and Friends:

The S. Calif. Conference was wonderful. We had several speakers that women around the country have not heard so it was great to have new information. We thank all our wonderful speakers and a special thanks to everyone in California who worked so hard to help with this conference. You know who you are!!

UPCOMING EVENTS: The Portland, Oregon Conference is almost upon us. Please register quickly. If you haven't experienced this time of year in Oregon, you have really missed out!! The conference will be held at the S. Portland Holiday Inn, 25425 SW 95th Ave. in Wilsonville, OR. (Just S. of Portland). Call (503) 682-2211 to reserve a room at the hotel. You may register for the conference at the door, but we may not have a meal for you if you do not register in advance. Late registration is $55 for one person and $80 for couples (no friends, please). I will be leaving for Oregon on Sept. 3rd so I cannot accept phone registrations after Sept. 2nd. I will be at my mother's home in St. Helens, OR for the two days prior to the conference and will be at the hotel the night before. I will check my home messages periodically. Speakers currently scheduled: Dr. Andrew Campbell, Dr. Mary White Stewart, Dr. Linda Huang, Dr. Aristo Vojdani, Sybil Goldrich, CTN, Jama Russano, CATS, Mike Williams, Williams & Troutwine. Several others invited.

We have heard of a group meeting in Salt Lake City Sept. 20-21 but cannot get any information on speakers or presenters or backers. They say it is being kept secret!! You can go and get angry about what has not happened, but I doubt it will change anything! Personally I will have nothing to do with secret meetings!! They almost always have hidden agendas and benefit those setting them up, not the attendees.

The October 4th Conference in Philadelphia, PA is scheduled at the Philadelphia Airport Hilton (215) 937-4510. Rooms are $89 (1-4 persons) until Sept. 20th. We have great speakers! Drs. Britta Ostermeyer, Arthur Brawer, Saul Puszkin, Andrew Campbell, LuJean Feng, Mary White Stewart & Sybil Goldrich, CTN & Jama Russano, CATS will be speaking, others invited.. Pre-registration $60 for one, $85 couple (not friends, please). Register before September 25th. After that date, $10 more per person & $15 more per couple. Lunch included. We have a great day scheduled so be sure to attend and tell your friends. Conference registration form is included at the back of this newsletter.

TDN conferences are being planned at Austin TX (11/15) and Little Rock, AR (10/18). In Little Rock, it is at the Holiday Inn Airport, $55 for consumer, $100 with spouse, $135 prof., lunch included. Call Sandy at (217) 352-8220 for information on Arkansas Conference. Call Kathy K-J (573) 445-0861 for information on the Austin Conference.

We are planning to do a conference in Hawaii and are working on details. January, I think!! We will have more later on this.

LEGAL INFORMATION: The big news of the month is the win against Dow Chemical in Louisiana. Many people do not understand how this class action trial works, so I will briefly try to explain it. We have won Phase I. This suit, also called Spitzfaden Class Action, has approximately 1800 women who live or were implanted in Louisiana. This phase of the trial did not decide if any of these women were damaged by silicone. What it did decide is that Dow Chemical is guilty of fraud & conspiracy for inadequately testing and researching silicone breast implants, intentionally misleading women and doctors about their dangers and conspiring with subsidiary Dow Corning to market an unsafe product. This is all good for us, both legally and morally. Phase II, which begins Sept. 29th, will actually decide if eight women, typical of the women in the class, were damaged by silicone from these implants. Phases III & IV will not be decided until we win Phase II. In Phase III, a judge (currently Judge Denise Page Hood in Michigan, but this could be remanded to Louisiana) will notify all women who are eligible (presumably those with Louisiana connections, unless they amend it to include all women with Dow products) that they can participate in this class action. Phase IV is the damages phase in which it is decided if each woman in the class is eligible and assess her individual damages. There is no jury involvement after Phase II. We have a long way to go, but the second phase should not take as long as Phase I. I suspect it will end by December (don't hold your breath).

What will happen after we win Phase II? That depends!! We could have another major class action in which all women with Dow materials and implants can then participate. There may perhaps be a class action suit against Dow Chemical that would net a settlement closer to the ones in the MDL (I hope this is not wishful thinking!) The Louisiana Class action suit could be expanded to include persons with Dow silicone. We must win the second phase and see what the results will be!! Certainly this opens the door for us to be compensated by Dow Chemical. What we must remember is that three juries in three different states have now all found Dow Chemical guilty!! These people are the ones who see the real evidence, not the PR campaigns that the Dows' put out to confuse the public. I guess you can't fool all of the people all of the time!! Dow Chemical had been reinstated in the MDL as a defendant. More next month!!

Dow Corning had to offer their terms of settlement as their exclusivity period in which DC's creditors were not allowed to enter a plan for DC's reorganization has expired. Their offer is $3.7 billion for all creditors and $2.4 billion of that for the silicone survivors (they have about 700,000 claims for all products, including joint replacements, penile/testicular implants, cheek/chin, etc. and about 200,000 B.I. claims.). This would amount to about $5000 per claimant. The Tort Committee should now be able to submit their plan for reorganization which is far superior to DC's. We'll just have to wait for what comes next & what the courts allow.

In Texas, five Norplant plaintiffs will have their cases heard in January. Other Norplant cases are also scheduled for early next year. The Birmingham law firm of Cooper, Mitch, Crawford, Kuykendall and Whatley and the Charleston law firm of Ness and Motley are handling these cases.

We lost two Bristol Myers Squibb cases this last month. Of course, we settled 10 times that many out of court, but you will only hear about the ones we have lost. That's how these manufacturers like it.

From Medical-Legal Aspects of B.I. Penile Implant Cases on the Rise. The doctor who reattached the penis of John Wayne Bobbitt, Dr. Melvin Rosenstein of Culver City, Calif. has filed for bankruptcy in the wake of 130 lawsuits against him & his professional group. There are suits against doctors in many states. One Miami surgeon received a 5 year sentence for manslaughter when a patient bled to death. 15,000 or more men have had penile augmentation even though the two most popular enlargement techniques have not been proven safe or effective. The surgery is not a simple procedure. The penis is lengthened by severing the suspensory ligament which attaches it to the pubic bone. Many doctors recommend that patients wear weights (just where and how do they attach them??) on their penises to lengthen the organ and help ensure that the ligament does not reattach to the pubic bone. The circumference is increased by injecting fat into the penis or grafting fat from another part of the body onto the penis. Some of the patients are embarrassed to discuss their injuries but some are quite verbal about the damages. One NJ man said he would like to smash the doctor's hands with a baseball bat so he couldn't do this to someone else!! Sound familiar?? These clients are having great difficulty going after coverage from doctor's malpractice insurance. Plaintiffs argue that their cases are based on fraud and may not be discharged in bankruptcy.

A settlement is in the works for the Canadian Recipients of Vitek TMJ implants (teflon and proplast). The distributor of these implants, Instrumentarium of Montreal, Quebec has limited assets. Vitek took out bankruptcy in 1990 & a class action settlement ($39 million) was finally concluded in 1995. There was a $30 million class action against Methodist Hospital in Houston, TX also associated with Vitek. Not all Canadian provinces have class action legislation so some provinces have a non-resident sub-class filed in Br. Columbia.

MEDICAL INFORMATION: Plaquenil is the brand name for the drug hydrosychloroquine, which was originally utilized to treat malaria & a liver disease caused by protozoa and then became a fairly common treatment to help relieve inflammation, swelling and joint pain of arthritis and other autoimmune disorders such as lupus or Rheumatoid Arthritis. The usual dosage is one to two tablets a day. Side effects include: Stomach irritation, edema, alopecia (hair loss), skin eruptions, leukopenia (low white blood count), aplastic anemia, anorexia, nausea, vomiting, weight loss, diarrhea, abdominal cramps, patches of dark skin, muscle weakness, visual problems (particularly degeneration of the retina of the eyes and irreversible eye disease), damage to a fetus if pregnant, etc. When one has malaria, the dosage given is usually not harmful to an unborn child but babies and children are very sensitive to this type of medication & can easily overdose. Plaquenil is usually given along with other anti-inflammatory drugs including steroids. Plaquenil is seldom recommended for long periods of usage because of toxic effects unless it is taken in small dosages as for malaria. Dosage is decreased with longer term usage to prevent eye damage. Please be extremely careful if you are taking this prescription.

Persons with severe blood disease, eye or vision problems, glucose-6 deficiency, liver disease (almost all silicone women have or have had some form of liver disease), severe nerve or brain disease, porphyria (many of us have had toxic porphyria), psoriasis, alcohol problems or severe stomach or intestinal disease should not take this drug.

Scleromyxedema, often called Arndt-Gottron Syndrome, is similar to scleroderma. The main symptom is a diffuse thickening of the skin which is caused by a build-up of mucus underlying the pimples that develop on the surface of arms & legs. It is a generalized variant of papular mucinosis, another disease. It may cause systemic problems and is associated with a benign monoclonal immunoglobulin. The disease often comes on gradually and can cover the face, arms, hands, legs, & feet. Lichen-like patches can spread over the abdomen and buttocks. Split and fragmented collagen bundles are found with the mucus deposits. Most tests for severe complications are normal but patients may have fever, fatigue, sleep disorders, cough, headaches, cognitive and balance problems and mental confusion. A few patients have lapsed into comas.

Various treatments have been attempted. Antimetabolites were used with serious side-effects, including death. Betamethasone was used topically & dimethyl sulfoxide solution is used with some success. Systemic effects are unknown at this time. In one patient with severe lesions, it took a year for his condition to resolve, Plasmapheresis has been used with some success. Local radiotherapy and electron beam treatment have also had some success. It is unclear why patients contract this condition and why the treatments work. Some of this information came from The Connector, the newsletter of the Scleroderma International Foundation.

Tear duct plugs are made of silicone. These tiny plugs are commonly utilized for Sjogren's Syndrome which is common among silicone survivors. They are probably not advisable for us because of our silicone sensitivities. Inter-ocular lenses for cataract surgery are often silicone as well. You can request ones that are not silicone, so ask your doctor.

A Danish Study, conducted by the Danish Cancer Society, found no link between connective tissue disease and breast implants, according to a study in the Annals of Plastic Surgery, July, '97. They stated that breast surgery of any kind, not just breast implant surgery, could cause the symptoms that we claim are caused by breast implants. The study included 2500 Danish women who received implants between 1977 & 1992 and 1100 women who had either breast reduction or breast cancer surgery. There was no significant increase in connective tissue disease in implanted women. All women in the study did have an excess of rheumatic conditions. (Wonder who paid for this one??)

Under the heading of " I thought I had heard the worst" comes this one: In Britain, a common treatment for childhood bladder problems is called the Sting (Sub Uretheric Teflon Injection) and it may be the cause of illness in two women in Britain. The Sting is a procedure in which they inject a Teflon compound containing SILICONE into the bladder at the point where the urethra meets the bladder. This is done to stop a reflux condition that could cause scarring in the kidneys and also cause high blood pressure.

One woman has a condition similar to MS and the other has one has a condition similar to a metabolic storage disorder called Niemann's Pick C. I have never heard of this one, so I will have to research it. Niemann's Pick C is usually caused by a faulty gene in both parents so it has been suggested that the women have a brand new storage disorder. The tests on these women did not show silicone poisoning but they did show mutant cells which grow and enlarge organs. The spleen and bone marrow were affected and the cells were visible in the lymph nodes.

This same Sting procedure has been utilized to treat adult urinary incontinence with no known problems, according to a Glasgow doctor. The manufacturers were aware of the silicone problem and told the doctors to use forms of silicone with larger molecules which were less likely to migrate. In the U.S., this procedure would be illegal. Some UK doctors would like to ban silicone in all medical and cosmetic situations and ask the European Parliament in Strasbourg to do so for all or Europe. This information comes from Medical-Legal Aspects of B.I., July '97.

From the Indiana School of Medicine, researchers discovered a molecule (entitled Her-2) that is manufactured by a specific gene in the body found in some cancer cells. Women with metastasized breast cancer (cancer that has spread beyond the breast) who had this molecule lived about half as long as women who did not. This Her-2 molecule was not affected by chemotherapy, so by analyzing the tissue for this molecule, many women who have it may be spared the agonizing problems and immune deficiencies caused by chemotherapy. Women like myself who had estrogen-positive receptors for breast cancer who have this molecule may not be helped much by common treatments. The best thing to do with breast cancer is to catch it early and avoid the major problems associated with metastasizing cancer and chemotherapy, which was not a walk in the park. I recommend that all women do monthly breast self-examinations & have regular mammograms (if you don't still have implants). Better yet, do that & also avoid the foods & drinks that are bad for you (some hormones given to animals and in many meat products, milk, etc. may cause cancer), take anti-oxidants, eat organic foods & avoid chemicals that may cause cancer. I wish I had known these things 30 years ago!!

As of June 1997, Mentor had enrolled 17,000 women in its study on the effects of silicone breast implants. The company reportedly has finished all of its animal studies and other laboratory tests. There are considerable questions about whether physicians have followed up with the patients. Y-Me National Breast Cancer Organization along with eight other groups has requested that the FDA withdraw its ban on implants. The FDA is still collecting data. If you have not filed your MedWatch form, please do so. To receive a form, send a SASE with $.32 postage to me at the address at the top of the newsletter & request the MedWatch-Watch Form. Write to the FDA and tell them not to return silicone implants to the market. Briefly tell them your horror stories. We don't want our children and grandchildren subjected to our horrors.

If you buy your milk in clear glass containers or in plastic (that lets in the light), your milk loses 90% of its Vitamin A in less than 24 hours from the light in the grocery store display cases. To avoid this problem, buy it from the milkman (keep it in the dark) or buy it in cardboard cartons.

Broccoli is one of the best suppliers of Vitamin C, an anti-oxidant. Steam lightly or eat raw so you don't lose nutrients. Broccoli contains calcium, folic acid, phytochemicals (cancer fighters) and is an excellent source of fiber. It is extremely low in calories. I don't care what former President Bush says!!

ALTERNATIVE MEDICINE: For healthier hearts, lungs, help in preventing strokes, breast cancer, miscarriages, stillbirth & failure to conceive, eat more green leafy vegetables, soy products and take fish oil. (Dateline, July '97). To prevent arterial changes that can lead to heart disease, take vitamins A & C before any fatty meal (pizza, fried foods, cheeses, french fries, hamburger, beef, etc.). Be proactive with your health!!

The enzyme taurine is a natural diuretic and also helps stabilize cell membranes, regulate heart rhythm and boosts immune function. It helps lower blood pressure. Pantethine can help lower triglyceride and cholesterol levels and it helps reduce blood platelet clumping. Eliminating foods containing tyramine is necessary if you have headaches or brain fog. Tyramine is in cheese, beer & wine, yeast, nuts, bananas, avocados, chicken livers, etc. Take phosphadityl choline or phosphatidylserine to help relieve brain fog.

A diet high in sugar & simple carbohydrates contributes to osteoporosis because it acidifies the blood. We need to keep our bodies more alkaline to prevent this type of problem as we grow older. Eat dark, leafy green vegetables and avoid tobacco, caffeine and alcohol. Take coral calcium, the most bio-available source of calcium. Take boron and magnesium. Also take good natural vitamins, minerals and anti-oxidants.

Music affects the immune system. Soft, environmental music or relaxation type music increases salivary levels of immunoglobulin A (IgA) and this may help prevent upper respiratory infections and colds. Irritating sounds can decrease the salivary levels of IgA and therefore increase the possibility of these same types of infections.

Claims that yogurt lowers cholesterol have been proven false. Yogurt does increase friendly enzymes in the intestinal tract, thereby helping digestion. It does not help if you have a severe allergy to milk products. Why are low-fat, high-carbohydrate diets killing Americans (and others in industrialized nations)? When people go for low-fat diets, they increase consumption of other foods. Carbohydrates covert to sugar, increase your body's secretion of insulin and therefore create problems with obesity, heart disease, and diabetes. People feel bloated, fatigued, lethargic. Children are getting fatter every day. What contains carbohydrates? Pastas, breads, grains, fruits, potatoes, and even vegetables. We must have a balanced diet which includes essential oils, protein, vitamins, antioxidants, minerals, etc. if we are to lose weight. Eating less is the only way and we much eat less of everything! We must always have the proper vitamins and nutrients to supplement our foods which now grow in soils almost completely depleted of minerals and nutrients. Nutrients enable our bodies to work. Drugs block our bodies' ability to work.

Can't lose weight after 3 months? Your body has a way of protecting you, so it shuts down the mechanism for weight loss after three months. When this occurs, alter your diet to maintain what you have lost for the next three months. Then start again and lose again for three months and repeat the maintenance cycle. These plateaus are designed to protect us from losing too much weight, so work with your body instead of fighting it!!

Miss fried chicken?? Remove the skin from chicken, coat with a dusting of flour and egg white, roll in bread or corn flake crumbs and bake. It will be crisp and wonderful!

Aging is mind over matter, according to some elderly and extremely healthy 80-90 yr. olds. Quotes: Sitting in front of a TV waiting to die is not good. The television going all the time is enough to kill anybody. Attitude is everything. Never retire. You can't stop your body from aging but your mind can stay forever young! If you finish one job, start another. 120 years old is what everyone should aim for! Once the brain stops working, it shuts down frighteningly fast. Change your attitude as well as your behavior. " Staying active and taking calcium, is the secret of living to the full" says Dame Barbara Cartland, who writes a book a month (age 95) and says she feels like a girl of 18.

Most cancer is caused by what we eat. Up to 70% of human cancers may be triggered by chemicals released during the breakdown of food. says the Univ. of Adelaide (Australia) Research Digest. Only 5% of human cancers are thought to be caused by artificial elements from the workplace. Scientists should worry less about cancer-causing chemicals used by farmers and industry and worry more about carcinogens made inside people's bodies. Free radicals produced by the body may be the biggest culprit in cancer. Polyunsaturated fatty acids create the most hydroxyl radicals. Consume foods low in lipids & take anti-oxidants and you could drastically decrease your risk of cancer.

All the drugs in the pharmacists' cabinet cannot beat the saliva of the leech that prevents blood from clotting. When doctors try to dissolve blood-clots, leech spit is the best thing going. A compound from leech saliva has been isolated that could prove to be a lifesaver.

Lead is common in hair dyes. Consumer's bathrooms, hair dryers, hands & newly tinted hair may be contaminated and increases the possibility of lead poisoning in children. Be sure any hair dye you use is lead-free. Progressive dyes, the ones used repeatedly to build up a desired color and maintain it, are the ones most likely to contain lead.

Dietary supplements that contain selenium may significantly lower the incidence of prostate, colorectal and lung cancers in people with a history of skin cancer. This supplement did not lower the incidence of basal or squamous cell cancers of the skin.

House dust is a significant cause of allergies in many people. In asthmatics, up to 80% are thought to be allergic to dust mite allergen. Feather pillows are less likely to be problematic than synthetic fibres. Polyester filled pillows had over three times as many dust mites as feather pillows. Houseplants absorb benzene, arsenic and formaldehyde and give off clean oxygen. Put plants in every room to clean your air. (Remember to water them!!)

Genistein, daidzein and equol are found in soy isoflavones. They fight viruses, bacteria and fungus & help keep cancer from getting a foothold. These substances may help keep arteries from thickening and actually reduce blood pressure, stroke and heart disease.

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS: Q. Why don't you print the entire journal articles in your newsletter like some others have? A. I send my newsletters first class mail. Some who have printed entire articles have often sent them by bulk mail which can take two to three weeks for delivery, Some did theirs as a newspaper, which I cannot do. If I print entire articles, I will have to pay double or triple postage to mail them & will have to charge more for the newsletter. I offer articles that people can order because I know that many women do not read the articles and are not that interested. When I can, I summarize them so that women can benefit from the information without having to read all the technical aspects.

IMPORTANT: If you don't believe that what you eat (or don't eat) can affect your health, why are we all watching for fat-free products to eat? Why are their recommendations to eat our fruits and vegetables? Our healthy diets are the most important aspect of our healing plan. The nutrients that we get into our bodies are the best medicine in the world!!

PRODUCTS AVAILABLE: Try coral calcium for three months and see if you don't have stronger fingernails, a higher pH balance, and more energy. It has worked for me. Send $33 for a month's supply and I will mail you a packet with instructions! It has helped me tremendously!! It could help you also!!

THIS MONTH'S POEM:

Implant Lemonade

by Derva Snider

When I got my silicone boobs
I went on a 'journey from Hell'
With multiple symptoms and surgeries galore
I have a sad tale to tell.

Chronic fatigue, tight chest and cough
A rash on my face and nose
Damaged nerves, migraines and muscle pain
I hurt from my head to my toes.

Irritable stomach and painful feet
My eyes are always red
Weight gain, infections and memory loss
Another miserable day in bed.

Dow Corning said "We're not to blame
When our implants harden, leak or tear
All your pain is in your head
Your illness is not our affair."

"Through bankruptcy and legal means
We can hide from you.
We'll wait for this to blow away
Then we'll start anew."

Putting cause and guilt aside
I had my silicone boobs removed
If there's no "implant-disease" relation
Why has my health improved?

I know I'll never be well again
Silicone implants are to blame
But better "alive than dead", I say
Though I must walk with a cane.

Dow Corning is in denial still
Our justice system is paid to thwart
How many women must sicken and die
Before our day in court?
