![]() COALITION OF SILICONE SURVIVORS
August, 1997
Dear Silicone Survivors and Friends:
The San Francisco Conference was great. We had great
speakers and the weather was wonderful. We enjoyed Chinatown and
the Golden Gate Bridge. Several women took a tour of San Francisco
and loved it. I love it every time I go there!! I love the women
in our groups who are there!! The conference was video-taped so
when we hear about the tapes we will let you know.
UPCOMING EVENTS: August
9th Orlando, FL conference. See last month's newsletter for major
details. $45 consumer, $85 couples and $125 professionals. Call
Kathy Keithley-Johnston @ (573) 445-0861 to register.
August 16th, Irvine, CA (Orange County). We have
a really great conference planned, so be sure to register. The
weather is nice in S. California in August so bring your beach
clothes and come. No humidity, no rain, just beautiful ocean breezes
and great friends. Dr. Nir Kossovsky will be one of our speakers
and we haven't been able to get him to a conference for over 4
years. Remember his great journal article on the Bio-Reactivity
of Silicones?? He was at the FDA in '92 testifying & is very
knowledgeable. We have other great speakers also so don't miss
this one. To register, send check for $60 single, $85 couple (before
Aug. 5th, after that $70 and $100) to COSS, P.O. Box 129, Broomfield,
CO 80038-0129. Visa/MC accepted for pre-registration only (until
August 10th). Lunch will be provided. See registration form in
last month's newsletter to register or call Lynda @ (303) 469-8242.
To register for the hotel, call (714) 833-9999, ask for the conference
rate of $79 single, $89 double ($10 additional person). Share
your room with a silicone friend and save money. Free parking
at hotel.
Sept. 6th Conference, Portland, OR at the S. Portland
Holiday Inn, 25425 SW 95th Ave., in Wilsonville, OR (just S. of
Portland) (503) 682-2211. Free parking. Cost of conference is
$45 single, $65 couple if registered by August 21st (mailed by
that date) and $10 more person or $15 more per couple if registering
late. Lunch will be provided. Speakers confirmed are Dr. Andrew
Campbell, Dr. Mary White Stewart, Dr. Linda Huang, Dr. Aristo
Vojdani, Sybil Goldrich (Command Trust Network), Jama Russano,
CATS. There will be attorneys speaking also. Several more speakers
have been invited and have not responded. It will be great, and
if you haven't been in Oregon in September, you will be impressed
by the weather. I often go to visit (my mother is there) in late
August and early September (the fruit is wonderful). Registration
form is at the back of this newsletter. It is only about 100 miles
from the beaches of Northern Oregon and I do my best to always
try to spend at least one day at the ocean. I find it healing!!
The Oregon Coast is the most beautiful part of the Western Coast
that I have seen.
The Chicago conference has been postponed to October
because of other involvement of the organizers. Stay tuned for
date.
October 4th Conference, Airport Hilton, 4509 Island
Ave. in Philadelphia, PA. Confirmed Speakers (so far) are Dr.
Saul Puszkin, Dr. Britta Ostermeyer, Dr. Andrew Campbell, Sybil
Goldrich, CTN, Jama Russano, CATS. Invited speakers are Dr. Arthur
Brawer, Dr. Douglas Shanklin, Dr. David Smalley, Dr. Thomas Conboy,
Dr. LuJean Feng. This is the first conference in this area (may
be the only one), so make your reservations early and be sure
to attend. Cost is $60 per person, $85 per couple if registered
by Sept. 25 (lunch included), after that date it is $10 more per
person and $15 more per couple. Call hotel @ (215) 937-4510 for
reservations. Room rates $89 (1-4 persons) guaranteed until September
20th, then $143. Free parking. Conference is jointly presented
by PA groups and COSS. Registration forms will be sent with the
September newsletter.
Look for an mid-October Conference in Little Rock,
AR and a November Conference in Austin, TX. These will be presented
by TDN. LEGAL INFORMATION: By now, most of you have probably heard that Judge Pointer was put in charge of the Dow Bankruptcy. What does that mean for women with Dow Corning implants? Mentor implants? Other implants? We know Judge Pointer is a conservative judge but we also know that his is fully cognizant of the issues around breast implants and that he will not be fooled easily by people who throw up smoke screens. We know that he has little patience with the games played by the manufacturers' so this is a plus for us. Judge Spector was definitely influenced by his Michigan location and the information presented by Dow Corning atty's., so I am relieved that Judge Pointer is the one in charge now!!
Judge Pointer's panel has heard evidence from many
experts and, from the reports given out, each side is claiming
victory in the presentations made to these experts. I will wait
for the panel decision to see what they say rather than getting
involved in debates about which side presented the best evidence.
Time is on our side. I remember when there was skepticism about
chronic fatigue and fibromyalgia.
Did you have Aetna, U.S. Healthcare or Metrahealth
and were you turned down for explant? Call Barbara Stock @ (407)
629-8791. You may have some recourse!!!
Did you hear about the woman in Northern California
who killed the plastic surgeon who reportedly bungled her implant
removal? This woman is very ill and was taken to a hospital in
a coma (cause unknown, but may have been self-induced) after the
shooting (the doctor's wife also is ill from implants). It certainly
shows the severe strain this illness causes people who are damaged
by breast implants and who cannot get (or won't accept) the help
they need. It is a shame that our problems are taken so lightly
in the press and by manufacturers and doctors. I heard that this
woman had a history of emotional problems (I don't know for sure)
and this was the straw that pushed her over the edge. I certainly
cannot condone what she did (and the receptionist she injured
was surely not to blame), but I can understand her level of frustration!!
My heart goes out to all who were involved in this particular
incident. We should be extremely careful, however, to keep our
movement away from controversies like this that would destroy
it. This is a legal issue and we need to leave it at that. We
can have empathy, but we must avoid involvement with people who
commit a crime in the name of revenge. We can empathize with her
pain but we cannot accept her actions.
I have heard through the grapevine (reliable sources)
that a few attorneys are saying that they think the support groups
do more harm than good. I suppose if they are only considering
the legal issues, they could believe that. But, if they really
care about the whole person, the well-being of the entire client
(if they are truly the caring individuals they tell us they are),
they would have to consider the emotional, social, medical and
physical needs of each client as well. I think that the groups
have done an enormous amount of good for these aspects of the
women's health. We have also kept women up on many legalities
that the attorneys have failed to follow through with. I think
that there are attorneys who sometimes do more harm than good,
especially the ones who do not inform the women of what is happening
in their cases, do not notify them of support groups & do
not tell them about conferences and resources available to them.
The women need to take a stand with their attorneys and tell them
that they are complete human beings, not just legal cases on the
attorney's docket and that they want to know about all the resources
out there, not just the ones that the attorney thinks are GOOD
ones and valid for their clients' legal cases.
Dow Corning is planning a $50 million expansion to
produce a chemical necessary for computer chips. Maybe with this
new plant they can afford to pay the consumers they have injured???!!!
MEDICAL INFORMATION: High
Blood Pressure (Hypertension). What is it, why is it bad, and
how can it be reduced so it is less damaging to the body? When
the blood vessels harden because of damage to the muscle around
them (usually). This concept is not well understood until you
realize that only arteries harden, veins do not. Arteries must
pump the blood back to the heart, so it is harder work. The muscles
around the arteries do not function as well, holes develop in
the arteries, stuff forms to patch the holes, the arteries harden,
the heart has to work harder, therefore, higher blood pressure.
When the heart has to work harder, it tends to give out sooner.
What should you do? What drugs can you take? What
side effects do they have?? Can you lower blood pressure without
drugs? The answers are not simple!! Drugs all have side effects!!
Read the PDR (Physician's Desk Reference) or the package insert
for the drugs to see what the side effect of any medication given
to you. Don't take a drug without knowing the possible side effects!!
Stress reduction techniques, weight loss, smoking cessation and
alcohol cessation (caffeine also) as well as exercise are great
ways to reduce high blood pressure. A diet high in sugar and sweets
can raise blood pressure. Vegetarian and/or high fiber diets can
lower blood pressure. Food allergies are one of the least known
important causes of hypertension. Some of the most common food
allergies are dairy and eggs, but wheat, citric, corn, peanuts
and others may also be a problem. Some people have white-coat
disease, which means that their blood pressure rises as much as
30 points just by walking into the door of a medical clinic. Take
your pressure at various times and find out if this is true for
you. A few people may not even have blood pressure problems. Don't
guess!! Be sure!!
Other diseases are sometimes hidden causes of high
blood pressure. This is true with thyroid disease (hypothyroid).
A potassium shortage can cause hypertension. Calcium deficiencies
have been shown to be a major problem that causes high blood pressure
in some individuals. Low levels of magnesium can also be a factor.
Anyone with high blood pressure should be taking calcium and magnesium
at the very least. Persons low in essential fatty acids may have
elevated blood pressure. These fatty acids are available in fish
oil, sunflower or safflower oils and omega-3 fatty acids (from
fish oil). Dry, flaky skin is a sign of a deficiency of fatty
acids. Co-enzyme Q-10 has been shown to reduce hypertension after
1-3 months of regular supplementation.
The causes of hypertension are not all known. Many
factors may play a role. Persons who take good food supplements
and carefully research the ones that affect their conditions are
more likely to have success in finding ways to treat (or prevent)
problems. If you are a newcomer to this process (as I was in 1991),
get help. Find a naturopathic doctor who will take you under his/her
wing and help you through the maze of supplements. You could live
longer and feel better without chemistry!! Don't quit taking blood
pressure medication without finding something that naturally reduces
your readings, because a doctor needs to follow your progress
and help you go from prescription to natural supplements. Find
a doctor who believes that not all the answers are from major
pharmaceutical companies.
Homocysteine blood levels can be indicative of your
potential for heart attacks. Levels below 9 are considered safer
as only 3.8% of persons with these levels had heart attacks. Persons
with levels of 15 or higher had a heart attack rate of 24.8%.
You can have these levels checked by your doctor but they are
not routinely checked so you must ask for this specific test.
Folic acid reduces the level of homocysteine, so if your family
has a history of heart disease or if you are more than 20% overweight
and have an increased risk, taking 1-2 mg. (not micrograms, as
in most multiple vitamins) a day could decrease your heart attack
risk.
CHRONIC FATIGUE SYNDROME: A Philadelphia-based research
group (Temple University) recently found that people with chronic
fatigue syndrome suffer from a defect in an enzyme the body uses
to inactivate viruses. This lends support to the fact that the
syndrome can start (but does not necessarily do so) from a viral
infection (even common viruses) that leads to a chronic abnormal
immune response. This enzyme has shown up in over 100 patients
with chronic fatigue so far. It also appears in about 10% of people
without this syndrome.
This finding could provide clues to the physiological
mechanism of the syndrome which has been attributed to dozens
of different immunologic, neurologic, muscular, cellular, viral,
environmental and nutritional causes. " Overactive and defective
antiviral enzymes may be involved in the production of fatigue
and also the cognitive symptoms" said Suhadolnik, one of
the researchers. This report, published in the current issue of
the Journal of Interferon and Cytokine Research, describes the
enzyme as an unusually small form of an enzyme called RNase-L,
which breaks down RNA. RNA is a molecule that is the principal
genetic substance of many viruses and is used by other viruses
to replicate. It is unknown whether people with chronic fatigue
syndrome inherit the defect or acquire it. Given the fact that
epidemics of chronic fatigue have occurred, I'll bet it's acquired.
ALTERNATIVE MEDICINE:
More American MDs are using natural remedies because there are
fewer side effects. Some of the ones that we can try are itemized
here: Feverfew for migraine headaches; taken daily, it often prevents
them from occurring. This costs about $10 per month. Coenzyme
Q-10 for heart problems, because persons with heart problems often
have severe deficiencies of CoQ-10. Improvement is found in 3/4
of patients with congestive heart failure who take this supplement.
Celery Seed for gout: it helps many when all else fails. Echinacea
for colds and flu; this herb is known to attack viruses. Fish
oil for many things, including heart disease, vasculitis, arthritis,
colitis, depression, aggression and Attention Deficit Disorder
(ADD). Ginger for nausea treatment and motion sickness, postoperative
nausea and nausea while pregnant. Kudzu to reduce the craving
of alcohol. Kava for tension, restlessness and stress, is shown
to have the same effect as benzodiazepines in relieving anxiety.
Saw Palmetto is great for prostate problems with up to 90% success
in reducing enlargements. Milk Thistle for liver problems; it
prevents damage and stimulates growth of new cells. Peppermint
Oil, when rubbed on the forehead, has been shown to reduce or
eliminate tension headaches. Vitamin C and E are great for the
heart and for keeping the arteries open, fighting plaque build-up
and warding off heart attacks. OPC's, the chemicals in grape seeds
and in pine bark, have been used (in Europe) to treat varicose
veins and other blood vessel diseases for over 40 years. Licorice
(not the candy) raises blood pressure and is used to treat chronic
fatigue. Grapefruit fiber helps reduce cholesterol; taken with
guar gum, it is a potent fighter of clogged arteries and liver
damage. Bee Pollen can reduce or eliminate some allergies. Ginkgo
biloba can help keep your brain from deteriorating with age. It
also helps tinnitus (ear ringing). These helpful tips come from
Miracle Cures (Jean Carper).
Capsaicin has anti-fungal activity and also treats
inflammation. It is an anti-oxidant. Olive oil can help lower
you LDL (the bad cholesterol. Garlic and fish oil also help lower
cholesterol. Garlic increases anti-oxidant levels and increases
SOD (superoxide dismutase). Diets high in fish, fruit fiber and
folic acid can help prevent gallstones. When you have an infection,
consider herbal alternatives to antibiotics. There are many, including
echinacea, goldenseal, barberry, liquorice, etc. For viruses,
antibiotics are often prescribed but are useless. Try viracin,
a compound made up of acerin, babul bark and canaigre root. If
you do take antibiotics, take probiotics such as lactobacillus
also because they replace the friendly bacteria in your digestive
system.
A tea from China may be the next break-through that
will help those with Alzheimer's Disease. The tea is from a plant
called Shen Jin Cao and the ingredient is named Hyperzine A. It
balances abnormal brain chemistry and alleviates many symptoms
of this disease.
Chickens fed flax have lower cholesterol in their
eggs. What will flax seed oil do for us?
The ingredients scopoletin and scoparone, contained
in eggplant, can lower your blood pressure. These nutrients have
a calming effect on the nerves that control constriction of your
blood vessels and this relaxes the pressure in the veins and arteries.
Heart disease is virtually unknown in Crete because
the people eat walnuts and a plant named purslane which contains
high levels of alpha-linolenic acid. Because the basic Mediterranean
diet contains many products high in this acid, it is better for
heart disease prevention that the one currently set up by the
American Heart Association.
One out of three people who die world-wide die from
infectious diseases. Hantavirus is now is NYC where once it was
confined to the SW part of the USA and in Mexico. E-bola bacteria
has made its way out of the jungle. New mutant strains of viruses
show up constantly. There is no way antibiotics could keep up
with these changes, even if they were effective for viruses. There
are many drug-resistant diseases today. If we are to ward them
off, we must build up our own body's immunity. A natural food
compound called DMG (Dimethylglycine) can boost your body's immunity
and defenses to about five times as strong as they now are.
Peppermint naturally calms irritable bowel syndrome.
Peppermint oil capsules have been utilized in Europe for ages
to treat these problems. Peppermint disinfects the stomach and
bowels, stops nausea and vomiting and relaxes the muscles of your
intestinal tract and prevents colon spasms.
OK, you have a right to be skeptical of this one,
but It sounds reasonable. Carcinogenic agents are often found
in both breast tissue and in the fluids extracted from the nipples.
These substances contribute to an increased risk for breast cancer.
However, nipple stimulation and orgasm (sexual) produces a compound
called oxytocin which triggers contractions of the small, sac-like
glands in the breast and this process actually helps cleanse the
accumulated carcinogens from your breasts. The blood supply carries
them away to be destroyed.
When you eat out, ask for meals to be cooked the
way you want them! Don't be shy!! Most restaurants will accommodate
you because they want you to come back and to recommend their
place to your friends. Ask about ingredients and ask for low fat
foods, not-overcooked vegetables, salad dressing on the side so
you can regulate how much you eat, baked potatoes instead of french
fries, and dishes prepared with less salt. I avoid MSG by asking.
Grilled, broiled, steamed, poached or roasted foods generally
contain less fats than other foods. Breaded, cheese-filled, fried,
sautéed or foods in cream sauces are generally higher in
fats.
Second-hand smoke is a cause of lung and heart disease.
Everyone is at risk, but children are at the most risk. The elderly,
pregnant or nursing and those with chronic disease should also
be extremely careful to avoid exposure. I don't allow it in my
home and I avoid places where it occurs (I am allergic to smoke).
To find restaurants where smoking is not allowed (at least 40
cancer-causing substances and 4000 chemicals are contained in
cigarette smoke), call Americans for Nonsmokers' Rights @ (510)
841-3032 or e-mail them @ anr@no-smoke.org
Should you use natural remedies? What if your doctors
say that they don't work!! When this happened to me, I found new
doctors. Natural remedies saved my life. I will almost always
try them before I seek an answer in allopathic medicine. They
do not harm your body and they are reasonably priced. You have
only your health to regain!! Take single ingredient products and
reduce the amount or stop taking them if you have serious reactions.
Try to buy the products in standardized dosages so you have the
same result rather than brand-jumping often. Everyone can react
to something, If the doctor gives you a prescription and you react
to it, he/she gives you another prescription. The same is true
with any supplement. If you react, try something else. I cannot
take echinacea but that doesn't keep me from trying other products.
Some things help me and some don't, but I keep trying. The same
would be true with any medication that a doctor might give me.
One third of Americans use herbal medicines. 10% of our medical
dollars are spent on alternative medicine and the estimate is
that 40% will be spent on alternative medicine in the year 2000.
Even doctors are catching on!!
IMPORTANT: When you hear
all this crap about how no illnesses can be proven to be caused
by breast implants, remember this: If the manufacturer's had been
able to prove silicone implants were safe, they would not have
been banned by the FDA in 1992. The point is not that
there is no proof that they cause injury (and we know there is
plenty of proof), the point is that they have never
been able to prove they were (and are) safe!! This is what we
need to emphasize. They are again making noises to the FDA (since
Kessler resigned) to make silicone available based on the Mayo
and Harvard (and other manufacturer-sponsored & paid for)
studies.
BOOKS: Miracle Cures
by Jean Carper, published by HarperCollins, about $25. This is
a book about alternative medicine and how much it is accepted
in Europe and how many of the treatments utilized have fewer side
effects that our prescription drugs. It lists many remedies we
can try without seeing a doctor. Most of these remedies have proven
value and are reasonably priced.
We have quite a selection of books available for
your continuing education on breast implant issues. Check the
flyer at the end of this newsletter for many available books and
much information. You may call and charge books (minimum $25 order)
to your MC/Visa.
PRODUCTS AVAILABLE: Weight
loss the natural way: Two products from Aspire 2000 are available.
Also available: Key-to-Sun, a product that absorbs the fats you
eat so they do not ever enter your digestive system. No drug interactions,
no severe side effects such as we hear about fen-phen, no prescriptions,
no doctors. For information on either of these, contact Lynda
@ (303) 469-8242.
How do we lose weight and keep it off? That is a
question I have been asking myself. We must have a plan and a
goal. We must put that plan and goal in writing and read it every
morning and evening. The plan must include a healthy diet and
reasonable exercise. It can include programs such as Weight Watchers
or it can be a plan of your own choosing, but you must have some
support to follow through. It is too easy to backslide if there
is no support, no plan and no goal. A plan might include going
to the department stores and looking at clothing in the size you
will be, planning on what you will wear to special occasions,
planning meals & menus and occasions to avoid foods that are
sure diet-killers and a plan to get support when you feel the
weakest and know you will sabotage your diet. These are attainable
goals if we plan them carefully, repeat our goals to ourselves
every morning and evening and get support from someone we can
trust to help us follow through. It is OK to use a product that
helps you with this plan, just be sure it is a product that will
not damage your health!!! Our health has been damaged enough by
breast implants!!
I read this in Sunday's paper " If I don't buy
it, I won't try it, and if I don't fry it, I won't have to diet!"
Not quite this easy, but it helps!!
