Dear Silicone Survivors and Friends:
The Reno conference went very well! Around 180 people
attended. We enjoyed seeing old friends and meeting new ones!
The speakers were excellent! Our thanks to all those who come
at their own expense to help us educate our survivors. A special
thank you to John and Colleen Swanson for taking 3 flights (arriving
in the middle of the night) and being there for all of us. They
also had to take 3 flights to get back home. This is above and
beyond the call of duty!! A special thanks also to Geoffrey White
of White and Meany of Reno for all their help and also to Lisa
Foster of the firm of Kruse & Parker for their help with PR.
There were some wonderful media articles that really helped get
the consumers out to the conference and helped to educate many
who are not breast implant survivors to the danger of these products..
Many corporations (U.S. West, AT&T, etc.) have
matching donation grants. If you (spouse, family, friend) work
for a company with this program, they will match your donation
to COSS or other 501-C-3 tax-exempt organization. Check it out
and make a donation today!! We all need your help to survive!
Wouldn't it be cool if someone worked for breast implant manufacturer's
and they had to send us matching funds?!!! I would laugh for weeks!!!

Shreveport, LA is tentatively planning a conference
for May 24th. A San Francisco conference is being planned for
July 19 or 26. Watch for more information. We are hoping to get
a San Diego/S. LA (Orange Cty.?) conference together for August.
A Spokane-Couer d' Alene conference is in the planning stages
for late Summer. Chicago is looking at the third week of September
for a possible conference. Watch for more information! The first
week in October may bring a conference in or around Philadelphia.
As you know, there has never been a conference in this area. Portland,
OR is in the dreaming-of-it stage, but would like to get one together.
For all conferences, it is best to make flight and
hotel reservations early. I generally buy my tickets at least
two months in advance so that I never have to pay a premium for
tickets. Tickets purchased at least 3 weeks in advance are usually
more economical. I call my travel agent daily (drives her nuts)
to see if there are any bargains as airlines offer one day specials
to fill certain flights.
LEGAL INFORMATION: Re:
MDL, Mentor & Bioplasty Settlements: Unless your attorney
has a signed lien for a doctor bill or surgery (meaning he/she
actually paid the bill or a lien was placed on your settlement),
they are only allowed to take 10% of your settlement. If you have
a lien signed by you to any doctor, the attorney is allowed to
pay that lien before you receive any $$. Any amount under $10,000
can only have a 10% fee subtracted from it for costs and attorney
fees. It does not matter if you owe the attorney $10,000, only
10% (I repeat, ten percent) can be deducted from these settlements.
If your attorney has subtracted more than this, send a copy of
their accounting to Ann Cochran, Claims Administrator, MDL 926,
P.O. Box 56666, Houston, TX 77256. Include a letter addressing
your concerns also with the accounting. If your attorney refuses
to give you an accounting (yes, this is happening), send a letter
with the attorney's name, address, phone number with your complaint
to your state attorney bar association and to the MDL address
above (if they took more than 10% of your settlement of under
$10,000). If any attorney fails to give you an accounting of their
expenses (for any settlement), file a complaint with the state
bar association. This is not ethical and not allowed. Check your
MDL documents for the limits that attorneys are allowed to subtract
for expenses from the amount you received or will receive. There
are strict limits! I think 23% is the highest amount and that
is for women receiving $100,000. They cannot take that much from
settlements of $50,000 or $20,000. Don't be victimized by your
attorney by allowing them to deduct more than is allowed by law
(MDL settlement). As I stated, liens are different. If your attorney
actually paid for a doctor or hospital bill, he/she is allowed
to deduct that amount. It is only fair that attorney's recoup
$$ they actually paid for medical expenses (when there is a lien).
If attorney's paid for expensive tests thinking that you would
get a larger settlement or that you would go to court, that is
not generally part of a lien for medical expenses & probably
not something the attorney can charge over the percentage allowed
by the MDL. If the expenses were for other things such as implant
evaluation, etc., they are not allowed to deduct these expenses
from your MDL settlement (over the % allowed).
We are still trying to find out about the $379 Mentor
checks. It appears that even the attorneys are not in agreement
as to whether to cash these or not. If your attorney says it is
OK, follow that attorney's advice. If you have more information,
please send it to me!
A judge in San Antonio gave a directed verdict for
Baxter Healthcare citing Daubert vs. Merrell Dow Pharmaceuticals,
Inc. as the reason testimony by Plaintiff's witnesses was not
admissable. This will be appealed.
As you may know, the class action suit is starting
in Louisiana. Jury selection finished March 31. The judge appears
to only like to work only a few hours a day so this case may take
months. As we receive information, we will pass it along. Dow
has been spreading their PR far and wide trying (we assume) to
influence jurors and the general public that they are the good
guys and that we are all wet with our claims! They have spent
so much money in PR that they could have probably paid for explantation
for every woman who cannot afford to have her implants removed.
But.....I guess their hearts are just not in it for the benefit
of the public! They just seem to want to influence us, not help
us! Should I be surprised??!!
Cox Uphoff (CUI) breast implant survivors may have
a second opportunity to file a class action suit. Don't miss out.
Opt-out of the class action when you receive your status letter
to prevent your statute from running out. There may be a new class
action against the companies responsible for these implants. If
you don't opt out, your statute begins running in 30 days instead
of 6 mos. If you have already filed a suit in court prior to the
class action, this may not apply.
MEDICAL INFORMATION: (BCDS)
B-Complex Deficiency Syndrome: What is it and how do we treat
it? If you answer yes to 3 of the following 10 questions, you
may have this syndrome. 1) Do you always feel hungry or have an
excessive appetite? 2) Does your heart palpitate or skip beats?
3) Do you have bouts of depression? 4) Do you suffer from chronic
headaches? 5) Have you been diagnosed as being hypoglycemic? 6)
Do you crave sweets? 7) Do you have trouble sleeping? 8) Are you
easily exhausted or chronically fatigued? 9) Do you feel overwhelmed
and unable to cope with life? 10) Do you have a recurring feeling
something dreadful is about to happen?
This is called a copycat disease because it mimics
a wide range of other aliments. It is often missed because it
is not looked for by most doctors. Sleeping pills worsen the condition.
If you have these symptoms, try an all natural B-Complex twice
a day for several months and see if your symptoms subside. Ask
your alternative medical practitioner or a health food store representative
for the most bio-available B-Complex supplement. Heart problems
often are related to B-Complex Deficiency Syndrome and drugs that
treat heart disease can mask the symptoms of BCDS.
20,000 people reportedly have this copycat disease.
Doctor's often think they are hypochondriacs because of their
complaints. Blood tests often show nothing (where have we heard
this before?) and therefore it is assumed that it is all in the
patient's head! (I think I heard that somewhere before also!)

The Mayo Clinic released a study showing that women
who had reconstruction has less satisfactory results from implants
than did women who chose cosmetic augmentation. I truly am not
surprised, as putting implants under the chest wall seems to be
a prescription for disaster. Not only are they closer to the lungs,
but the pectoral muscle contracts and would undoubtedly cause
them to wear out faster. Besides that, when a woman has had her
immune system attacked by breast cancer, why should she be exposed
to a foreign object that would also damage her immune system?
It seems a little insane to me.
From Health Alert, Winter, 1997. Are you taking any
of these dangerous drugs? Aldomet, Ativan, Bentyl, Catapres, Dalmane,
Darvocet, Darvon, Donnatal, Dyrenium, Elavil (imipramine), Feldene,
Halcion, Indocin, Librax, Lomotil, Persantine, Restoril, Tigran,
Valium, or Xanax? These 20 drugs top Health Alert's Watch List
of the 150 medicines with the worst side effects. They contain
extremely powerful chemicals that can produce devastating side
effects, especially in older users, such as: dizziness, memory
loss, fainting, irregular heart beats, and shortness of breath.
Despite such dangerous side effects, doctors continue to prescribe
these drugs often. Each year Americans spend more than $1 billion
on just the drugs listed above. If you are taking any of these
drugs, don't stop cold turkey. You must gradually replace these
toxic time bombs with safer alternatives. Check with your alternative
medical practitioner. To subscribe to Health Alert (& get

ALTERNATIVE MEDICINE:
B Vitamins (especially folic acid) can reduce the risk of heart
attacks and strokes by 40% Make sure they are natural and not
artificial or synthetic. Potassium and bioflavonoids protect artery
walls against damage from high blood pressure. Synthetic antioxidants
may not protect you against free radical damage, so make sure
they are all natural. Psoriasis and eczema may be reduced by eliminating
chlorine from bathing water and adding raw flax oil to the diet.
30,000 Americans die every year as a result of the trans-fatty
acids in margarine. Eat butter and cook with extra-virgin olive
oil. Cut your consumption of fats way down and use natural ones.
Organically grown fruits and vegetables have higher nutritional
contents. Synthetic vitamins can have hidden side effects, much
like prescription drugs. Always check the label and be sure your
vitamins are natural. Often indigestion is the result of too little
acid, not too much. This is often true as we grow older. In this
case, in the long run, antacids will make the problem worse. NSAID's
can have a harmful effect on strep bacteria, transforming them
into more virulent strains.
By the time your blood calcium shows a low calcium
count, the calcium in your bones and other parts of your body
is dangerously low. Contrary to popular belief (including some
doctors) kidney stones and gall stones come from a lack of calcium,
not an abundance of it. Calcium in these stones is directly robbed
from your bones.
Acupuncture and TENS units work on the same principle.
Both stimulate the body to block pain signals to the brain by
use of the body's electrical pathways.
High levels of cholesterol in the body often mean
that you have a calcium deficiency. The cholesterol that is blocking
your arteries patches them so they cannot leak. They spring holes
because of mineral deficiencies (most frequently calcium). Cholesterol
patches these holes to save your life.
If foods can cause harm to your health (fats, sugars,
overeating etc.), why is it so difficult to believe that diet
and nutrition can heal your body? Even physicians seem to fail
to catch this simple logic!! Hippocrates, the Father of Medicine
said " All food is medicine, and the best food is the best
medicine!" Hippocrates knew that prescribing garlic and onions
helped cure cancer. In China, where they eat tons of garlic and
onions, stomach cancer is almost non-existent. Certain extracts
of both garlic and onions have proven to be antibacterial, antifungal,
and anti-thrombotic (help to prevent blood clots).
" Calcium deficiency is the universal property
of all cancer cells." The Role of Calcium in Biological
Systems Vol. 1, 1985 CRC Press. " The calcium ion regulation
of intracellular messages has broad implications in the treatment
of disease." The Calcium Signal, Ernesto Carofoli
& John Penniston, Nov. 1987, Scientific American. " Considering
the wide variety of calcium binding proteins in the cell, the
potential targets of calcium related disorders are enormous."
Calcium Binding Proteins, Marvin P. Thompson, 1988, CRC
Press. Calcium is critical in DNA synthesis & DNA is the building
blocks of life. With our malabsorption problems, getting enough
calcium is crucial. " The association between milk drinking
and lowered heart attack risk is clear." Dr. Ann Feheley.
It did not matter whether the milk was whole, reduced fat or skim.
The calcium protected the body from the harmful effects of the
natural fat! Heart disease could probably be reduced 10-fold by
adequate calcium intake.
The medical establishment has been wrong about our
need for vitamins. Now they are trying to tell us that we do not
need minerals. The sad truth is that the medical community will
be the beneficiary of our ignorance because all of us who do not
receive the essential minerals we need will be their patients
many more times than those of us who supplement our mineral intake
to insure that we have what our body needs. People in geographic
regions that have an abundance of minerals in their soil and water
are seldom ill. Their bodies use what they need and discharge
the rest. So do ours! Science rigorously denied the existence
of germs until it was proven. Science denied that all life is
composed of atoms until it was proven (about 100 years later).
Science does not have a very good track record of accepting new
ideas. Let's keep that in mind!

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS:
Q. Why do women who want to get well go back to the same type
of doctors who made them sick? I am amazed that so many women
will flock to doctors and take pill after pill and believe these
doctors when they tell them that this is helping them! Don't they
get the picture? A. Did you notice that also? I've been saying
that for years! So many people buy into Allopathic Medicine without
analyzing this whole situation thoroughly. Some people are so
hooked into this system that they will never get past it. We must
learn to accept other people's ideas and thoughts even if we do
not agree. I personally know women who will die because of all
the prescriptions they are taking and there is nothing I can do
to prevent it. I don't know anyone who is taking a lot of prescription
drugs who is getting better. Some women just seem to think that
they cannot live without them. Q. Just what are the doctors treating
the women for, anyway? It seems to me that they are just treating
symptoms, not the cause of the problems!! A. BINGO! If you treat
symptoms, you will not solve the problem! But as I recently saw
on TV, we are a nation that thinks every little pain and ache
must be treated! Propaganda that the company's put out has been
effective. Have a sore leg, take an aspirin or try a rub-in treatment.
Never look at the cause and try to figure out why you have pain,
just treat the symptom! We sell so many over-the-counter drugs
that it is unbelievable!! They all are toxic so what are we doing
to our bodies? If we could just sit back and look at what we are
doing we would be shocked at all the garbage we take!! But, getting
back to the doctors who prescribe pill after pill to treat symptoms,
that is just what they are trained to do! To avoid this, go to
doctors who really look for the problem and then work to solve
it, not cover it up! That's why I hardly ever go to a doctor!
I generally refuse to take pills unless I can see that they are
solving a problem, not covering it up or treating symptoms!!

PERSONAL COMMUNICATION:
I have often wondered just how to describe my condition, and I
finally found the word I was searching for. I feel better, but
I don't have stamina. I cannot keep up a pace that I easily could
do 7 years ago. I find that I have strength that I didn't have
several years ago (91-94), but I just don't have the stamina to
get things done that I used to. I feel better but am not the same
person physically. When I try to push myself I have more physical
problems, more fatigue & more pain. I guess that is the real
difference. I can do almost anything if I pace myself and allow
plenty of time for rest! Doing anything for two days in a row
is difficult, for three days it is nearly impossible. Will it
ever be like it was?? Will I ever be the same? 7 years ago I was
working out at the gym for 90 minutes 3 x week and walking 2-3
miles the other days. Now I walk for about 30 minutes, sometimes
longer, but I don't think I could work out for half an hour without
an hour's rest. I wonder, at age 55, if one can ever recover the
stamina? I have done everything I know to get the nutrients I
need & have a positive attitude about healing.

Yes, I have heard the criticisms of the fact that
I now am a distributor for some health products. It is interesting
that some of the people who criticize me would buy the same products
from others without criticizism but if someone who is involved
in the silicone issue dare to try to make a living, we are fair
game to talk about. We should be supporting each other's efforts,
not criticizing them. Who better to do business with than one
of our own? Who knows what products do for us better than someone
who has had the same problems? Let's pull together, not stoop
to petty criticisms. We all need to earn $$ to survive. I have
dedicated over 6 years to this cause with no pay. I think I have
earned the right to make a living! I would never deal with a product
that I have not found helpful to myself and to other silicone
survivors.
IMPORTANT: There is some
erroneous information that hard Silastic implantable devices are
not as dangerous as silicone or silicone shell saline-filled breast
implants. They may take longer to have the significant problems
that breast implant recipients have had (sometimes they do) but
they are causing serious problems for many people. When they are
in the head and neck area (because of the extreme amount of blood
flow in those areas), they can cause many problems quickly. We
have heard from many women and men who have had problems with
silicone implantable devices including sheaths, penile implants,
pectoral implants, testicular implants, joint replacements, brain
shunts, Norplant birth control devices, etc. They are ALL
having problems, so don't let any misguided people (including
doctors) tell you that these devices are safe (or even much safer
than soft silicone devices), because they are NOT!!!

If you, like me, have gained 40 pounds since you
became ill with silicone/saline implant disease, try Key-to-Sun
(Chitosan) to lose weight. My daughter lost 20 pounds in two months
on this totally natural, safe, fiber product. It is about $33
for a month's supply and I can order it for you or mail it to
you. You have nothing to lose but the weight!! You simply take
this product one-half hour before any meal that contains fat products
and it absorbs the fat and removes it from your body. Don't take
it with any fat-soluble nutrients (such as evening primrose oil,
garlic in oil, etc.) because it also absorbs them. I take it before
I eat pizza (homemade and vegetarian) or when food contains fat
that I know is bad for me (& I am eating it anyway).

THIS MONTH'S POEM:
The Dilemma
by Lynda Roth
I tried to help her see
She wasn't all alone
I tried to help her cope
>From this end of the phone.
She said she was in pain
She'd been ill for years.
But the most difficult part
Was coping with her fears.
How can I go back?
There was nothing there!
If I have these removed
People will just stare!
Will my husband still love me
When I am flat again?
What will I tell my family?
What will I tell my friends?
I don't think I can face this!
What would it hurt to wait?
Can't I just have saline
Will my symptoms all abate?
I'll have to think it over
It's just too much to face
How can I have them out
Without something in their place?
I hear what you are saying
I'll have to think it through.
I know you must be right
I'm not sure what to do.
I'll face all this tomorrow
I have to find a way.
I won't forget your message
I'm too upset today.
