Dear Silicone Survivors and Friends:

Dateline, NBC had an interview with John and Colleen Swanson on October 10th. John is a former ethics board member for Dow Corning and Colleen is his wife who almost died from breast implants. The book, " Informed Consent" , was just released. Check for it at your local bookstore. Oprah will have a show on Friday, Oct. 13th with the Swansons (right before you receive this newsletter). We heard it was great and that Oprah had tears in her eyes at the end.

Arthritis Today had an article very negative to breast implants in the Sept/Oct. issue. Check it out. Call them at (800) 933-0032 after you read it, or write them at Arthritis Foundation, Inc., 1314 Spring St, NW, Atlanta, GA 30309.

Baxter International won another Texas case. We heard the judge left holes as big as a semi-truck for an appeal.

The Denver Conference was great. We learned some new things about hyperbaric medicine and also some good new information on many alternative type treatments. We also had some good rheumatological information. You can order a copy of the tape (see VIDEO below). This will probably be the last Denver Conference. If you would like to put on a conference in your area, I will be glad to help you. Please let me know. I have some great speaker ideas (on healing from silicone) that I was unable to utilize in our conference because of scheduling conflicts.

If you are moving, please be sure to send us a change of address. You would not believe the number of subscribers who don't do this. We attempt to locate our subscribers, but we never find some of them. Don't just send an envelope with a new address and assume we will catch it. We receive too much mail to notice all changes.

UPCOMING EVENTS: Look for articles in MS Magazine and Family Circle in November. The FDA will release a new package the end of October. Their new figures show a 51% rate of frank ruptures and 71% leaking or ruptured. These are statistics reported to them, not figures for all women who have implants.

Have you been watching Court TV? The case being filmed is in Reno, NV and deals with Dow Chemical Corp. and its involvement in the silicone breast implant issue.

Britta Ostermeyer-Shoaib will speak for Project Impart group in the Bay Area (Calif.) on October 24th, 6:00 to 9:00 P.M. Address is Peninsula Hospital, 1783 El Camino Real, Burlingame, CA. For more information, call Linda Thompson at (510) 420-0151.

October 28, 1995, Toronto, Ontario, Canada Breast Implant Conference. It's not too late to register. I will be attending. The fall leaves should be gorgeous and Niagara Falls is close by. If you haven't had an opportunity to come to a conference and especially if you live close to Toronto, this is your opportunity. All your favorite MD's and other professionals will be there. Call Joyce Attis at (416) 636-6618. We need to all support our silicone sisters' efforts to help all of us stay informed.

Conference Saturday, November 18th at the Park Hilton Hotel in Hot Springs, Arkansas. Speakers pending. Rooms are reserved at $55 per night for both Friday and Saturday. Most airlines fly to Little Rock, just 45 minutes away. This is a resort town. If you ever wanted to visit this resort area and also if you live near this area, don't miss this one. Contact Shirley Goodner at (501) 394-3995 for more information.

The Annual Women's Health Conference is sponsored by the National Association of Women's Health Professionals in collaboration with the National Women's Health Resource Center, Office of Research on Women's Health, NIH, the CDC, the US Dept. of Health and Human Services and other important groups. It will be held in Bethesda, MD on November 13-15. If you live close by, why not organize a group to help educate them. Fax Susan Boone at (513) 737-5859 (fax only) for information on how they recently organized at the NOW meeting.

LEGAL INFORMATION: Warning: A lawsuit has been filed in Texas against Baxter Healthcare, Inc. for invasion of privacy for tactics that overstep any reasonable bounds of ethics. Apparently they have been charged with hiring private detectives and a former prostitute to pry into the private lives of women by seducing husbands of women with lawsuits so that they could coerce information from the husbands about their wives' illnesses. Richard Mithoff, the Houston attorney who filed the case, accused the company's attorneys of going to improper and illegal extremes to try to cast doubts on the illnesses alleged in the lawsuits. Defense investigators have resorted to surveillance photographs and videotapes of the women, their spouses and their minor children. Mithoff claims that the defendant's attorneys and their " hired guns" have gone beyond the bounds of decency. Reportedly, Mike Gallagher of Dallas will file similar charges against Baxter on behalf of three of his clients. Will these defendants stop at nothing????? Apparently not!!!!! Please warn everyone with an independent lawsuit of the tactics some of these defendant companies apparently attempt (and succeed?) at doing. They have followed women everywhere and have asked neighbors about the women. They will collect any and all information, and apparently do it at any cost, just to try to show that we are not as sick as we really are!! Beware!!!

Class action lawsuit: The October 1st deadline for the manufacturers has passed. Judge Pointer has entered an order (Oct. 9th) that new opt-out rights will begin on Dec. 1, 1995. Class members and their attorneys should not expect any payments under the current class action. Class members will begin receiving notices of opt-out rights, proper procedures, and opt-out forms between mid-November and early December. Opt-outs will not be accepted until Dec. 1. There is currently no deadline for opting- out. Those with Mentor or Bioplasty may remain (considering the bankruptcies of these companies, they probably should stay in this settlement) in the settlement and may receive a small settlement. On Oct. 1st, Baxter (Heyer-Shulte), 3-M (presumably including some McGhan, but not mid-to-late 1980 or any 1990 McGhan implants), and Bristol Myers Squibb (Surgitek, Med. Eng.) manufacturers agreed on a new plan. Apparently they will have individual settlement plans with more restrictive criteria. Persons with at least one implant from any of these manufacturers will qualify. You must have written documentation of the manufacturer of your implants. The amounts cannot change because of number of claims or opt-outs. The manufacturers will not be able to walk away because of more opt-outs. There will be much more time to determine which manufacturer you had, to fix any deficiency in your claim, or to add additional supportive documents under the new, more restrictive criteria. There are two options for current registrants. One: If you registered and submitted a qualified disease category claim for the class action by 9/16/94, you can elect to receive a fixed amount, based on disease categories in the current settlement, of between $10,000 to $100,000, depending on your disease category, and elect to stay in the current claimant group. Two: You could choose to wait and you could be eligible for payments of $75,000 to $600,000, but the criteria will be much more restrictive, which will inevitably make it harder to qualify. You may have to prove that you have classic rheumatological or neurological diseases. That means that more evidence of illness will have to be presented before that payment can be made. In either category, you would receive a small payment of $5000 as soon as feasible. Timely registered members who did not submit disease claims under the current disease compensation schedule may still participate and will be eligible for payments between $75,000 and $250,000 if they have or develop one of the more restrictive diseases during the 15 year period. A payment of up to $3000 to help defray costs of explantation would be available to these persons. Those proving a rupture prior to Dec.'96 will receive higher settlements in the above categories. It is not known if that will affect the Mentor (which I had) or Bioplasty settlements. No mention is made of what happens to women who failed to register by 9/16/94. It is unclear what the status of foreign claimants will be, but it does not look good. The board of directors of these companies and their insurers must approve these new separate class actions. Information about these new class actions will periodically be placed on the 800 number: (800) 887-6828.

MEDICAL INFORMATION: DHEA (Dehydroepiandrosterone), a hormone used as a replacement or as a supplement to your body's own natural adrenal output. This hormone is often used to help combat effects of aging in both men and women. Some women who had breast implants are using this hormone to help recover some of the vitality they have lost. DHEA, produced by the adrenal glands, peaks in puberty and levels off by age 25-30. It continues to decline with age. DHEA has been called a marker of aging, because lower levels correspond with physical frailty and increased incidence of diseases such as cancer and heart disease. Low levels of DHEA replacement help counteract these types of health conditions. Only humans and higher primates naturally produce DHEA.

In post-menopausal women, a dosage of 50mg. of synthetic DHEA has been found helpful. This should be taken before bedtime, as nighttime is when the body naturally produces this hormone. Benefits of DHEA include: Physical and psychological well-being demonstrated by increased ability to cope with stress, increased mobility and physical activity, improved quality of sleep, and reduced joint pain. There is generally no change in libido. Biochemical changes included an increase in IGF-I (insulin-like growth factor). This growth factor declines with age in parallel with the decline of the immune system and muscle mass. IGF-I has a multi-functional role in the regulation of cell metabolism, which means it regulates cellular well- being. There is some indication that DHEA replacement helps repair some immune functioning and bone density loss. Prolonged overdoses may cause masculinization.

The above information is from a lecture given by Dr. Samuel Yen.

High amounts of the steroid (hormone) DHEA sulfate in the body are associated with a 36% reduction in death from al causes and may be protective in heart disease, diabetes, cancer, Alzheimer's, memory deficits, AIDS, chronic fatigue, and a host of other diseases. California researcher, Julian Whitaker, MD, medical director of the Whitaker Wellness Institute in Newport Beach, recommends DHEA supplements of 25mg. per day for women and 50 mg. per day for men to restore youthful levels. High doses of DHEA have been shown to slow the heartbeat and may have other side effects, so dosage must be carefully controlled. (Longevity Magazine)

There are some vitamin and food supplements that help create DHEA naturally in the system. The basic one is chromium picolinate, which increased natural DHEA by 24%. This mineral has a significant impact on how the body deals with the building blocks for bone. Alone, it reduced bone loss by 27%. When taken with calcium (800mg. daily), it reduced bone loss by 47%. Chromium picolinate also increased glucose tolerance, which is significant in treating diabetes. In also has been shown to lower body fat and increase muscle mass. In post-menopausal women, DHEA is the body's only source of the hormone estrogen. Wild Mexican Yam also contains natural DHEA, but studies have not yet shown that it increases the DHEA levels as much as needed. Lower levels of DHEA have been linked to obesity, immune system dysfunctions, and osteoporosis as well as general bodily deterioration. Natural DHEA is regulated by its own production. Synthetic DHEA may create problems in that it is not regulated by the body. There is a saliva test for DHEA levels. You take a sample 3x a day and send the samples in. (I don't know just where it is sent.) Blood tests are also available. The best recommendation, if you wish to take DHEA, is to be supervised by a doctor who is familiar with the hormone and is willing to closely follow your progress. If you wish to create more DHEA naturally, take chromium picolinate and Wild Mexican Yam. Consult your alternative medicine advisor for more information. (Study presented in Experimental Biology, 1995.)

Women who took estrogen for a least 6 years increased their risk of fatal ovarian cancer by 40% or more. Women who took estrogen for 11 years or more increased their risk of fatal ovarian cancer by 70%. Women who take HRT (hormone replacement therapy increase their risk of getting breast cancer by 150%. This is according to a study in the British Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology.

ALTERNATIVE MEDICINE: Are you aware that prednisone can, in rare cases, cause serious immediate side effects?

From New Health & Longevity: Nutritional Programs for Symptoms of Silicone Adjuvant Disease:

For Joint Involvement and Arthritis Pain: 1) Glucosamine Sulfate, 500 mg. 3x day. GS is a building block of joint cartilage. It inhibits cartilage loss, reduces pain and halts damage in osteoarthritis. It has no side effects. Benefits increase the longer GS is used. 2) Chondroitin Sulfate A, 250 mg. 2x day. Anti-inflammatory, and protects the joint lining against degeneration, inhibits immune system factors that degrade cartilage, regenerates cartilage and synovial fluid in conjunction with GS. 2) Pycnogenol, 200 to 400 mg. per day. One of the most powerful broad- spectrum antioxidants and free radical scavengers known. It reduces inflammation and increases joint flexibility. Users report substantial pain relief. No known toxicity. 4) Fish Oils, 5-6 capsules per day. This is highly effective in reducing inflammation in rheumatoid arthritis. It regulates immune response, specifically reduces autoimmune dysfunction.

For Neurological Involvement: 5) Green Tea Extract, 500 mg. 2x per day. It is 200 times more powerful than vitamin E in preventing lipid peroxidation in the brain. It has numerous health benefits. 6) Ascorbyl Palmitate, 500 mg. per day. This protects against lipid peroxidation.

For Cardiac Involvement: 7) CoQ10, 50 to 150 mg. per day. This is very effective in treating and preventing congestive heart failure and heart disease in general. CoQ10 is a precursor to the energy molecule ATP. 8) L-taurine, 6 grams per day. Taurine supplementation has produced significant improvements in cardiac output, palpitation, and congestive heart failure. 9) Magnesium, 500 to 1000 mg. per day. Magnesium deficiency is now being recognized as a major cause of heart failure. Recent research shows that magnesium can prevent heart disease and fatal heart attacks. It is also important in calcium balance.

For Fungus/Infections: 10) FOS (FructoOglioSaccharide), 5 grams per day. A special sugar from Japan that dramatically increases healthy bacteria in the colon. Overgrowth of unhealthy bacteria has been linked to rheumatoid arthritis. Increasing bifidabacteria crowds out the unhealthy flora. It helps prevent leaky gut syndrome.

For General Problems: 11) Calcium, 2 grams per day. Many women have very low calcium levels. Some symptoms are hair loss, brittle nails, and signs of osteoporosis. Take it with magnesium, inositol, manganese, and vitamin D3. 12) Potassium, 200 to 500 mg. per day. Frequent urination depletes potassium levels. It is important for cell growth. 13) Silymarin (milk thistle extract) 50 mg. per day. This is especially for women with polyurethane implants. It improves liver function and protects the liver from free radical damage.

Top ten food additives to avoid: 1) Aspartame (Nutrasweet or Equal): This chemical sweetener has the longest list of complaints the FDA has ever received. Reactions such as rashes, depression, headaches, nausea, ringing ears, vertigo, insomnia, motor control loss, change of taste, slurred speech, memory loss, blurred vision, blindness, suicidal depression and seizures have been reported. 2) BVO-Brominated vegetable oil: This is used as an emulsifier in some goods and as a clouding agent in many popular soft drinks. Bromate, the main ingredient, is a poison. 3) BHA-Butylated hydroxyanisole and BHT-butylated hydroxytoluene: This is used to prevent fats, oils and fat-containing foods from becoming rancid. These chemicals, according to some research, caused brain enzyme changes in mice offspring. These changes affect transmission of nerve impulses. Changes caused by this chemical can also affect sleep, levels of aggression, and weight. Most consumers eat close to 20 milligrams or more of either of these chemicals per day. 4) Citrus Red Dye #2: Carcinogenic and may cause chromosomal damage. Used to color orange skins. The FDA has recommended a ban. 5) MSG-Monosodium Glutamate: A flavor enhancer, found in many fast foods, processed foods, and packaged foods. Symptoms include headaches, flushing of the skin, tightness of the chest, heart palpitations, and nausea. 7) Nitrites: Used as preservatives in bacon, ham, and smoked fish. Nitrites form cancer-causing compounds known as nitrosamines in the gastrointestinal tract. In some research, they have been associated with human cancer and birth defects. 8) Sulfur dioxide, sodium bisulfite, and sulfites: Used to preserve dried fruits, and also used on shrimp and frozen potatoes. Adverse reactions include asthma. Four deaths have been contributed to sulfites, according to FDA statistics. (My sister is very allergic to sulfites.) 9) TBHQ-Tertiary butyhydroquinone: Used often with BHA and BHT to spray the insides of cereal and cheese packages. It is toxic at extremely low doses and has been implicated in childhood behavioral problems (hyperactivity, etc.) It is in candy bars, baking sprays, and fast foods. 10) Yellow Dye #6: Candy bars and carbonated beverages contain this chemical. It increases the number of kidney and adrenal gland tumors in rats. It may cause chromosomal damage as well as allergic reactions. It has been banned in Norway and Sweden.

Many seafoods are unsafe because of chemicals and pesticides in the water. The safest ones, according to David Steinman, author of Diet for a Poisoned Planet, are: Abalone, Arctic char, Crawfish, Dungeness crab, English Sole, Fish sticks, Flounder, Grouper, Haddock, Halibut, Mahimahi, Marlin, Octopus, Orange roughy, Pacific salmon (wild), Red snapper, Scallops, Sea bass, Shrimp, Sole, Spiny lobster, Squid, Talapia, Tuna, Wahoo, Whiting, and Yellowtail. I recently found one from Australia that also appears to be safe, and that is Dory. Unsafe selections include freshwater Bass, Catfish, Cod, Coho salmon, Great Lakes Salmon, Maine lobster, Lake trout, Norwegian salmon, Ocean perch, Shark, Swordfish, Walleye, White bass, Whitefish, and White and Yellow perch. There are others. It is better to go by the safe list than to guess.

Our diet, years ago, used to be rich in Omega 3 fatty acids. They no longer are. We should all be supplementing our diets with fish oils or other Omega 3 fatty acids.

Green Tea: A powerful herb that lowers cholesterol and blood pressure. It is a powerful antioxidant (free radical scavenger); in one report it was reported to be 200 times as potent as Vitamin E in preventing lipid peroxidation in brain tissues. It should, therefore, slow aging of the brain. Multiple Sclerosis and Lupus patients may well respond to this tea. Green tea extracts have been shown to enhance the activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD), a vital free radical scavenger produced in the body. Research has show a strong correlation between SOD and life span. In a 1993 study, over 90% of tumor formation was blocked by green tea extract. In a study on breast cancer, when mice were exposed to a cancer-inducing chemical, 93.8% of rats treated with green tea extract were still alive 36 weeks later as opposed to 33.3% of the controls. Green tea can help protect against UVB (sunlight radiation). It shows great protection against environmental cancers according to John Weisburger, PhD, MD, and colleagues at the American Health Foundation. Both black and green tea increases the metabolic processes that detoxify environmental toxins and carcinogens in rats, and may well do so in humans. Green tea extracts help neutralize the nitrosation of nitrite compounds (in bacon, sausage, and commercially preserved meat products) when tea is taken along with or after the meal. It shows strong evidence of stroke prevention. You can brush with green tea extract to help prevent cavities. Current research indicates 5-10 cups of green tea should be consumed daily. Green tea extract capsules are available. Check potency, as they vary. For liquid tea, buy unprocessed Chinese or Japanese green tea. Use filtered water. Make sure the brand of capsules you buy is analyzed for polyphenols. (Each 20mg. of polyphenols equals 1 cup of tea). Substitute black tea when green is not convenient. Green tea should be taken during and after meals. Studies show that green tea works to neutralize dietary carcinogens in the stomach during digestion.

A great salad dressing can be made by opening a Vitamin E capsule and sprinkling it on the salad and squeezing a small piece of lemon over it. It is healthful and additive-free.

To return your system to well-functioning, your diet should consist of organic grains (50%- half in grain form and the remainder can be in the form of cereals, breads etc.), organic vegetables (25%), organic fruits and other foods, including meats, nuts, etc. (25%). No more than 1-2% of your diet should consist of sweets of any kind. No artificial sweeteners should be used.

Kitchen cleansers often contain petrochemicals. Look for products that are water-based, free of phosphates, biodegradable, and free of propellants. Baking soda works well for scouring and vinegar added to water works well for cleaning windows. There is a product called Simple Green that works well for cleaning many things. Resins utilized in plastic often contain cancer-causing substances. Don't use them in microwaves. Use glass or unleaded ceramics. Don't use aluminum cookware.

The " Consumer Dirty Dozen" , a list of products that are potentially hazardous to consumers. 1) Beef frankfurters, which contain nitrite. According to the Cancer Prevention Coalition, they have been associated in three recent studies with increased rates of childhood leukemia and brain tumors. Children eating more than 12 hot dogs a month have up to nine times the normal risk of developing childhood leukemia. 2) Whole milk, contains unlabeled toxic ingredients that include DDT and recombinant bovine growth hormone. 3) Talcum powder, Johnson & Johnson, contains talc. 4) Cover Girl Replenishing Natural Finish Make-Up (foundation), Procter & Gamble, contains BHA, talc, and titanium dioxide. 5) Crest Tartar Control Toothpaste, Procter & Gamble, contains saccharin. 6) Alberto VO5 Conditioner (Essence of Neutral Henna), Alberto-Culver USA, Inc., contains formaldehyde. 7) Clairol Nice 'n Easy (Permanent Haircolor), Clairol, Inc., contains toxins including quarternium-15, a formaldehyde releaser, and diethanolamine, which interacts with nitrites to form a carcinogen. 8) Ajax Cleanser, Colgate-Palmolive, Inc., contains crystalline silica. 9) Zud Heavy Duty Cleanser, Reckitt & Colman, Inc., contains crystalline silica. 10) Lysol Disinfectant Spray, Reckitt & Coleman, Inc., contains orthophenylphenol. 11) Zodiac Cat & Dog Flea Collar, Sandoz Agro, Inc., contains propoxur. 12) Ortho Weed-B-Gon Lawn Week Killer, Solaris division of Monsanto Co., contains 2,4 D. QUESTIONS & ANSWERS: Q. If I have Mentor or Bioplasty implants, can I stay in the class action and still pursue the other manufacturers involved in making the implant materials, or can I also pursue the manufacturer of my other set of implants that were not manufactured by these companies? A. The current belief is that you can be a part of the settlement for Mentor and still pursue a claim in the Dow bankruptcy. You may receive less from the bankruptcy, but no-one knows for sure. The claims against Mentor will be pro-rated according to degree of illness, just as they would have been against any other defendant in the class action. Bioplasty is another story. Apparently most Bioplasty implants were not silicone and no Dow products were used. I am not aware of any other manufacturer who is involved. Most women may have to settle for what they receive from the bankruptcy settlement with the class action. It's not good. Q. If I have implants from both Bristol-Myers Squibb and Baxter, can I file with both companies? A. Probably not, but more information will be available about this soon.

IMPORTANT: A little more commentary, for those of you who still don't know just how political I am. There are many ways to work for the enemy. Some people do it without understanding that they are doing so. It is easy to be duped by reporters just chasing a good story. If you are causing negative publicity about our issues, you are working for the enemy. We have seen some of this done on Nightline several weeks ago and in the New York Times about 2 weeks ago, on CNN earlier this year, and in some other papers, especially around Houston. The New York Times article, criticizing a few doctors, makes it look as though all the doctors treating us are just out to get what they can from us. We also saw an example of working for the other side in the woman who stripped to the waist at the Washington, DC rally. Spreading rumors and trying to defame our leaders who are truly trying to help others is another way to work for the enemy. It is an illegitimate way to try to achieve or retrieve power. Let's all work on positive energy and positive leadership and quit helping those who are trying to hurt us. They can, and are, doing that all by themselves.

Anger: A useful emotion, as long as it is directed at the correct person or persons. I believe some of what we see happening between some of the women in the silicone network is anger misdirected. We see women working against the cause by way of trying to demean, criticize, blame, belittle, attack, etc. one another. We are angry at the doctors and the manufacturers. Lets direct our anger where it truly belongs, not at each other and at those who have attempted to help us. This is not productive and, indeed, hurts all of us.

Why does it seem that many women only show interest in meetings or information that deal with settlements? Is health of so little value that we cannot focus on it? I would like to see more women focus on how to heal than on how to get even!! Justice may never be ours, but we can reclaim our power and our health.

A CALL TO ACTION: Perhaps one way to help our cause is to inform the first lady, Hillary Rodham Clinton. Write a brief letter explaining how you have been affected by silicone implantable devices and how reforms in product liability laws (limiting punitive damage claims to $250,000) would affect families and would inevitably lead to the government paying for more women on disability, thereby causing the government to pay more. Hillary's personal contact: Alice J. Pushkar, Dir. of Correspondence for the First Lady, Hillary Rodham Clinton, The White House, 1600 Pennsylvania Ave., Washington, DC 20500. Also, Kenneth F. PERSONAL COMMUNICATION: The person who wrote the article in last month's Cosmo magazine was not the doctor who worked for Dow Corning. I made a mistake in names. He is apparently a writer. Did you know Cosmo does not have a section for letters so if we complain they don't have to print any of them? How cute!!

DONATIONS: The Coalition of Silicone Survivors is a not-for-profit, tax-exempt corporation with over 4000 members world wide. Our editor, Lynda Roth, is a survivor having heard the dread word 'cancer' followed by the reassuring 'will look like a normal breast'. In addition to having helped start many support groups, Lynda has appeared before the FDA, congress members, national TV in the US and other countries and lectures internationally. Your donation will definitely help others receive information about the dangers of implants.
